Product

Starting on November 1, we're changing how the Kiro free trial works. If you upgrade to Pro for the first time, the rest of that month is on us. You also get 500 trial credits that you can use any time in the next 12 months. For example, if you upgrade on the 15th, you pay nothing until the first of next month. You get about half a month of Pro credits plus 500 more.

What's changing

Starting on November 1, both plan fees and credits will be prorated. If you upgrade partway through the month, you get credits for the days that are left instead of a full month's worth.

If this is your first upgrade from the free tier, the rest of your first month on Pro is free. Your first bill arrives on the first of the following month. The trial credits will be used after you exhaust your plan credits. Trial credits expire after 12 months.

Starting on a bigger plan

You can start on Pro+, Pro Max, or Power instead of Pro. Your free Pro month still counts toward it. You only pay the difference between your plan's prorated price and the prorated Pro price.

The $20 discount

If you upgrade before November 1, you still get the $20 discount, and you keep the credits you haven't used. After that date, the new trial replaces it.

Downgrading and upgrading again

If you go back to the free tier, your unused trial credits carry over. Note that on the free tier you can only spend them on free-tier models. The free trial applies only on your first upgrade. If you upgrade again later, we prorate your fee and credits as usual, but you don't get a second free month.

How the math works

We prorate to the second, based on the exact time you upgrade. Your share of the month is the seconds left in your billing cycle divided by the total seconds in the month.

Prorated fee = (seconds remaining / total seconds in month) × monthly plan fee

Prorated credits = (seconds remaining / total seconds in month) × monthly plan credits

For the Pro plan at $20 per month with 1,000 credits in a 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds), upgrading at 00:00 UTC on day 15 means 16 days (1,382,400 seconds) remain. Your prorated fee is (1,382,400 / 2,592,000) × $20 = $10.67, and your prorated credits are (1,382,400 / 2,592,000) × 1,000 = 533. The first month on Pro is free, so you pay $0 and still receive those 533 plan credits plus 500 trial credits.

On Pro+ ($40) at the same moment, the prorated fee is $21.33. Subtract $10.67 for the free Pro month, and you pay $10.67.

If you upgrade at 2:30 PM UTC instead of midnight, fewer seconds remain, so your prorated fee and credits are lower. The table below assumes upgrades at 00:00 UTC in a 30-day month like November.

Why we're making this change

Prorating keeps billing fairer. We also want everyone to get a good first experience, no matter when they sign up. If you sign up on the 28th, the 500 trial credits give you room to try Kiro on a real project. They don't expire when the month ends, so you can take your time.
