Set up a bot

Set up a Kiro bot, give it an ongoing goal, and approve its initial milestones and check-ins.

Before you begin: Have Kiro Crew latest version installed and sign in with your Kiro account.

Info

If you need to set it up, see the Kiro Crew documentation.

Step 1: Open your bot in Kiro Crew

Open Kiro Crew. In the left navigation bar, select Bots (below Sessions), then open the built-in bot. Its persistent conversation, called a thread, opens.

Step 2: Name your bot

The bot introduces itself and asks what you'd like to call it. Enter a name and send your response, or keep its default name. It uses the selected name in subsequent conversations.

Step 3: Set a goal and approve milestones

The bot asks what you'd like it to work toward. Describe an ongoing goal rather than a one-time task. For example:

Help me contribute regularly to the Kiro Crew open-source project. Find suitable issues, aim to submit one high-quality pull request each week, and track my progress.

The bot proposes a goal for your approval. Review the goal card and edit it if needed.

The goal card may also include a Heartbeat checkbox, selected by default. When enabled, Heartbeat wakes the bot every hour to work toward your goal without waiting for a new message from you. Each wake consumes credits. If you don't want the bot to work automatically, clear the checkbox before approving the goal.

Once you approve the goal, the bot researches it and proposes measurable milestones. Review and approve the milestones to establish your plan.

Step 4: Configure check-ins

The bot may also suggest check-ins to help you track progress:

  • Daily Goal Reminder: Updates the goal's status each day.
  • Weekly Report: Summarizes completed work and progress toward milestones.
  • Monthly Review: Reviews overall progress and recommends adjustments to the plan.

Review the suggested schedules and enable the check-ins you want. All check-ins are disabled by default.

Once your plan is approved, ask the bot to start working. It can delegate longer tasks to workers and share their results in the same chat.

Return to this chat anytime to check progress, provide feedback, or adjust priorities.

Step 5: Set up the dashboard

The Dashboard tab gives you an at-a-glance view of key metrics, current progress, and items that need your attention. You can customize the dashboard to show whatever matters most to you, such as project milestones, task status, upcoming deadlines, recent accomplishments, or blockers that need your input.

You can set up and customize your dashboard in two ways:

  • Ask in chat: Tell the bot what you'd like to see. For example: "Set up a dashboard showing your current tasks, progress toward this week's goal, and what's next." You can also request changes at any time, such as "Add a section for open pull requests" or "Highlight tasks that need my approval."
  • Use a suggested prompt: On the Dashboard tab, select a suggested prompt. It appears in the chat box, where you can edit it before sending. Selecting another suggestion replaces the previous prompt unless you've edited it, in which case the new suggestion is added below.

You can continue refining the dashboard through chat as your goals and priorities change.

Summary

Your bot is now set up with:

  • A name and an approved goal
  • Milestones to track progress toward the goal
  • A customizable dashboard to monitor progress
  • Any check-ins you've chosen to enable

You can now collaborate with your bot through its chat to work toward your goal. Your bot can delegate longer tasks to workers and share their results in the same conversation, so you can review progress, provide feedback, and adjust priorities along the way.

If Heartbeat is enabled, your bot can also work autonomously toward your goal at specified intervals, without waiting for a new prompt from you.
